Supporting children and young people with disability

Tools to support organisations to uphold the rights of children and young people with disability

Everyone has a role to play in safeguarding children and young people, including those with disability, from abuse and harm. That is why we have developed a suite of resources and educational videos that will:

  • support organisations implement the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations (National Principles)
  • help parents, caregivers and kin understand their role
  • provide children and young people with information about their rights when they are in an organisation.

Resources designed for the different groups of people in the life of a child or young person with disability who play a key role in safeguarding.

Videos to help people understand how to make their organisation safe for children and young people with disability.

Consultation

Before developing resources to help people implement the National Principles, we engaged Children and Young People with Disability Australia (CYDA) to consult with stakeholders. The information CYDA gathered helped us create resources that support organisations to better keep children and young people with disability safe.

CYDA consulted a range of stakeholders, including:

  • children and young people with disability
  • organisations that work with children and young people with disability
  • state and territory children’s commissioners and guardians.

CYDA prepared a consultation report, which was published in late 2022.

If you or a child are in immediate danger, call Triple Zero (000).

Information on reporting child safety concerns can be found on our Make a report page.
